And if you are living the Dystopian nightmare? Please stay safe, you are not alone, you do not deserve to be hurt or abused, you matter, you are important and it is NOT your fault. If safe for you to do so, consider reaching out to your State DFSV support or call one of the National 24/7 helplines. You can choose to be anonymous. You do not have to give them your personal information if you do not feel comfortable doing so. But know that this is their job, this is what they do and they will support, believe and help you. You will no longer be alone.
Trust me
Imagine always questioning your sanity, your safety, your minute-to-minute decisions and actions because you were trapped in an abusive relationship. Senses heightened, unable to sleep, feeling constantly anxious, always wired and hypervigilant to danger and threats with an inability to regulate your emotions, your body, your thoughts and feelings. Socially isolated from friends and family, unable to discern fiction from reality and feeling removed from the world: alone, afraid, trapped, invisible, confused. Not knowing who was a safe and trusted person to turn to, speak to or confide in.
What sort of Dystopian nightmare is this?
This is what MILLIONS of Australian domestic, family and sexual violence victim-survivors experience and more, EVERY DAY they remain in an abusive relationship. Leaving does not guarantee safety either; it can INCREASE the risk for women and children being killed by their partners and fathers, people who purported to ‘love’ them!
But this is NOT a story of love. This is a story about Power and Control. About entitlement. About controlling and dictating the lives of others; slowly destroying them through constant, deliberate, insidious, manipulative and abusive tactics. Emotional, mental, financial, physical abuse and more.
This is not a family problem nor is it a ‘private matter’ between adults. Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence is a societal scourge in Australia. It impacts all families, communities and Australia as a whole costing the economy billions of dollars every year in medical and health care costs, lost revenue and unemployment. Not to mention the long-term health and trauma impacts that it has on victim-survivors for the rest of their lives.
But all hope isn’t lost. Coercive Control laws are being introduced in almost every state. A spotlight is being shown and research being undertaken on the impacts of Domestic, Family and Sexual violence on Australian children, teens and adults. Domestic, Family and Sexual violence is slowly coming out of the shadows from behind closed doors and into the light.
