The Bush Rider Jeanette Wehl
The Bush Rider is a chronicle of one lifetime, that being the lifetime of Donald Cairns Lawrie, DCM. Compiled by his daughter, Jeanette Wehl, through hand written notes written fifty years after the end of WW11, this book is aptly named ‘The Bush Rider’, as Donald never left the bush, both in spirit, and whilst physically embracing it.
The story begins in the Burnett region of Queensland, when life was simpler, wildlife more prolific, communities more united and worldly goods less important. It is also an account of five years active service in the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) during the Second World War, ending with soldier settler days in the Western District of Victoria, and a final return to Queensland, where Don settled with his family on the Darling Downs.
Together with over 100 photos and five maps, the book gives a detailed insight into an Australian way of life that, to many, appears to be quietly slipping away. Whilst it is a historical account of one 80-year lifespan, it is a story of war, love, and hope.
