A former Australian Navy UW (Under Water Warfare), who saw action during the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation of 1962-66, Douglas Cope was the second son of a soldier settler who grew up cultivating grapes in the infertile Mallee scrub of regional Victoria.

In Volume 3 of his memoirs, Second Son of a Soldier Settler: Towards The Unknown, Doug moves to Malaysia in the early 1990s to undertake his first overseas construction contract: building and grassing over an 18-hole championship golf course near the
capital Kuala Lumpur.

Through raids by monkeys and immigration officers, bulk dismissals, monsoons and squatter revolts, Doug stays the course, finishes the contract, then moves on to manage and prepare the 1994 Malaysian Open Golf Tournament at the prestigious Royal Selangor Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur.

Reflecting on his role as a father and husband, Doug lays bare his indiscretions and shortcomings. He is proud of his daughter’s achievements in the Australian Navy, and his son’s career in golf course management and professional rugby league.

Doug’s battle with the bottle and his infidelities on ‘male only’ nights out cause much hurt on the home front, and he finally seeks counsel through Veterans Affairs in Australia. Doug remains grateful for their ongoing support in his later years as he struggles with both physical and mental health issues.

A new love and a move to an island paradise contrast with travesties from within
both the medical and legal fraternities in Australia make for an unexpected finale.
