This autobiographical story describes how the author, a Queensland bush child destined to become a grazier, pursued a few different careers, including Catholic priesthood, Queensland grazier-farmer and orthopaedic specialist, before eventually embarking on an unplanned but highly successful career in public health. 

The author Douglas (Doug) Gordon held the position of Professor of Social and Preventive Medicine, University of Queensland, 1957-1976, his career foci being occupational health, public health, medical epidemiology and preventive medicine. In 1979, he was appointed AM in recognition of his services to medicine.
