The Customs officer at Birdsville used to live in a tent until it was blown away, and he now lives under the shade of a tree by the creek, where he transacts all business, sometimes has about £2,000 stacked round him.

A young man, who gave his name as Kenneth McLeod, died here last week, it is supposed, from dysentery and scurvy. He was reduced to the last state of emaciation before death. There being no doctor here, nothing much could be done for him. It has been threatening rain for some time.
