In the autumn of 1906, a wheat farmer from the dry Mid North of South Australia took his good racehorse to the big city to test his mettle. Rocky Glen had won 36 races in the last three months. Meeting with success, Harry Gregory saw an opportunity and set up home and stables in Glenelg, suburban Adelaide and began a career as a public trainer.


Over the next forty years the astute horseman turned out a procession of top-class gallopers whose deeds endeared him to South Australia’s racing public in often difficult times of war, drought and economic uncertainty. Harry’s kind and patient methods won over many a horse, and there was much success in the journey. There were also the challenges to be met, and the horseman from the bush carried through.
