When Peter Billycan meets Sally, Elsie, Lizzie, and twins Hamish and Maggie, he sends them on an adventure through time to experience the history of Melbourne.
The young adventurers explore the streets, meet fascinating people, and learn how time and progress shaped the city. Along the way, the children learn about the original caretakers of the land, the Aboriginal peoples, and their respect for the land. With guidance, the adventurers come to understand the environmental concerns now facing us and how industrial developments changed the land forever.
The reader can follow along with the adventurers on the illustrated maps inside the book.
About the author
Alistair Pirie is a Melbourne based writer and sculptor who grew up in the then-unfashionable, working-class western suburbs of Melbourne. He takes inspiration from his childhood, growing up in a time when children had a stronger connection to their environment. He aims to encourage the next generation to care for the land as the original people cared for it, to try and restore it to something like its earlier condition.
Keep an eye out for the next Peter Billycan adventure.
