1945 Lost
by Susanne Heggie
In 1945, a small boy and his mother were flying north from Derby across the remote Kimberley Region in Western Australia to the Kunmunya mission. The pilot unwittingly overshot the mission, ran out of fuel and was forced to land many kilometers north. They spent four days without food or water before being found and rescued by the Aboriginal people from the Kunmunya mission. Decades later, in 1971, that small boy returned with his own family to reconnect with the people who saved him. 1945 Lost shares the story of the young survivor’s recollection of the crash, along with photos, newspaper articles, and how their ongoing journey brought the Heggie family and three generations of the Kunmunya people together.
